Science is basically the research and study of something
Pure science takes a more mathematical approach.
Applied science ( such as sociology) applies the scientific research to specific human needs.
.
It is like bananas, apples and oranges are all fruit. In the same way sociology, astronomy and geometry etc.are all science.
