hi, i was wondering if pet insurers pay out say if my dog where to get ill and we were to use the year limit but was still ill the following year or the illness returned would they pay out the limit for next year like they would if it was a fresh illness or would they not because its the same illness as before? and also who are the best people to get the insurance with?

my pet insurance was very good they payed out above the limit but informed me that they wont pay for any more treatment (skin problem) or any other health issues caused by the medication she had to have this letter came when they paid the latest vet bill and it was at the time to renew the policy some of the bills where over £1000 a time and the vet i went to was not one that made there prices high.

These are questions you have to ask the specific insurer or read in their 'fine print'. Generally, if the condition didn't exist prior to the start of the policy and it is not congenital, it's covered so long as there is not a lapse in payment of the policy.

Keep in mind that pet insurance doesn't even pay most of the cost. I think it's useful to have in the case of injuries, but my sister discovered that pet insurance barely covered half her bills when her 3 year old cat was being treated for cancer (she succumbed). Until recently, most pet insurance would not underwrite a pet over the age of 12 (our cats typically live 15-18 years).

These policies are ideal for folks who can't really handle unexpected vet bills (since you have to pay immediately). Instead of pet insurance, I opened a savings account at the bank for $300 (bank minimum) the year I got my pets and added $100 every year. This was to cover unexpected costs, not the usual annual visit. 1 pet died a year later, but I actually had the funds to cover that without going into the account. 18 years later when my cat became very ill, I had plenty of $$ to cover the costs. Others just use their credit card; even with interest, they often pay less than they would have with pet insurance. If your dog breaks his leg, you'll certainly appreciate having pet insurance. I am including a link to an insurer who does not require that your vet be part of a network. Just make sure your regular vet is willing to fill out the paperwork for you. Some vets don't want to be bothered.

Hi Kerianne, not sure what country your from but in the UK I use one called Pet plan, this is 100% cover. If they treated my dog for a illness and he got the same illness the following year he would still be covered because it would be classed as ongoing treatment. I assume your from the states because I don't understand this one year limit thing, if my dog got ill and it took five years to cure him my insurance would still cover all the vet costs. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Pet insurances are businesses: they make money! On average, people pay more money to the insurance than they ever do to their vet ...

However it is a good way of spreading the vet fees over very long period to make sure that you will be able to provide your pet with the best possible care should anything happen.

Moreover, on occasions, the insurance will have to pay enormous vet bills that no one could afford.

For the 2 last reasons, I think that pet insurance is a very good idea.

Im not sure about once the year is up but sounds like that if it is the same problem they probably wont pay out! And be careful hun cos when we put our dog to sleep the other week we expected to be payed back for him which came to over £200 but they said they dont pay out for uthinisation once the dog is over 8 years old! This is absolutely ridiculous as not many dogs need this til they are old!! Just wanted to warn you it may happen I hope your dog gets better soon xx

Your vet probably has an opinion about whats a good company; you want one that pays the vet directly, not re-imburses you! Vets deal with insurers all the time so as well as searching online, ask the vets surgery!

I googled 'compare vet insurance and got this;
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=compare+veterinary+insurance&btnG=Google+Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB

Pet Insurance Directory about halfway down the page looks like a comparison site.

One of the biggest costs associated with pets are vets’ bills. If your pet gets a cut or a bite from another animal or swallows something it shouldn’t, for example, you can expect a costly visit to the vet. That’s why Direct Line’s Pet Insurance covers your pet per condition so there is no restriction on the number of times you can claim. Furthermore, there’s a fixed, one-off excess for each condition.

We have two levels of pet insurance, and both automatically cover vet’s fees up to the amount you choose. Direct Line Essential Pet Insurance insures against veterinary fees for a maximum of 12 months’ treatment of each illness, injury or disease (up to £4,000 per condition). Direct Line Advanced Pet Insurance insures against veterinary fees up to £6,000 per condition and there’s no time limit on reaching this amount.

Among the additional cover options for our pet insurance is overseas travel cover, which includes quarantine costs, loss of pet passport, tick and worming treatment and emergency expenses abroad.

Whichever level of cover you choose, you’ll have access to our three helplines: find a vet, legal advice and pet bereavement counselling. Invest in Direct Line Pet Insurance and if you do need a vet, we’ll not only help you find one, but we can also arrange to pay them direct, saving you the time and trouble of doing so.

With Direct Line’s Pet Insurance starting from just £6 a month for cats and £8 a month for dogs, it makes sense to get a quote from us and see how much you might be able to save next time your pet needs to see a vet.
