Ok I just had my first baby he is a week old. Right off the bat here is what you need.....
lots of wipes
lots and lots of hand soap for you
lotion for your dried out hands
diapers
socks
onesies
more than one changing table cover especially if you are having a boy
lots of blankets
scent and dye free laundry detergent
a bottle sanitizer if you don't have a dish washer (I really wish someone would get me one) or at the very least a really big pot for boiling water
a bassinette
if you are breast feeding a breast pump
breast pads and a clip in the front or nursing bra
lots of button down shirts
rubbing alcohol
baby oil
cotton balls
washcloths (huggies disposables are pretty useful)
car seat
diaper bag
diapers
cloth diapers or burp rags
nose booger sucker thingie
pacifiers
You'll be surprised what they will give you in the hospital. They will actually give you a lot of stuff. These are all things I have used in the past week. I have a swing and all that but I think my kid is a little too small for all that and he mainly sleeps all day. One more thing I reccomend getting if you haven't had the baby yet that no one is going to tell you to get is actually for you. Get some disposable underwear like depends or poise. You'll thank me later.

You should have lots of bottles and pacifiers. Its funny but just like socks, these get lost real fast. You can never have too many blanets all shapes and sizes. And once they start crawling, you will want to have plug covers. Those come in handy, I still use them and my son is 4 (they get curious).
Good luck!

Baby swing! My daughter LOVED hers.
Plenty of onesies and little cotton pants.
Video monitor...you'll be more likely to let them start off in a crib (avoiding transition issues) if you can see they're OK at night!

My best buy was a baby sling!!! It's truly invaluable and my daughter LOVES it! It allows you to be nearly as independent as before your baby which is priceless!
