Sometimes my car (1999 Subaru Impreza) will not start when it is sitting out in the hot sun. It usually starts on the second try, then runs really rough for a few seconds and then runs perfectly fine. It seriously only does this when it has been sitting for several hours in direct sunlight and it is hot outside (80-90 degrees).

It sounds to me like the fuel in the injectors/fuel rail is evaporating(wont start 1st time). The the fuel pump pressurizes the system, but there is air in the line(runs rough for a few seconds),then clears up and runs fine. I would have some one look at the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator.

It sounds like the fuel pump may be loosing its prime.Try cycling the key from the off position , to just before it cranks the engine!Do this 3 times and then start the car,if it starts fine, iwould suspect fuel pump, pressure regulator, or filter.

Vapor lock??? Just for fun. Take some aluminum foil and wrap it around your fuel line as much as you can. This will be a heat sink and will take some of the heat away. See if that does anything.
