Sat-nav isn't good enough to identify which lane you are in. It will probably pick up if you are on the wrong side of the motorway though, but you may well have noticed this already! (Clue: all other traffic coming towards you!) As a rule drive in the leftmost lane that is free of other traffic unless this would mean continual lane switching.

I never had a sat nav and never will, I believe them to be distracting.

In your case I would not rely on a sat nav to know what lane you should be in, I would go with a partner/family member/friend on the motorway first. If the sat nav said remain in the right lane etc you would get confused and get distracted and cause an accident.

I sincerely doubt it does...and if it did, that would not absolve you of any guilt should an accident occur because you did not have the common sense to figure out for yourself which lane you should be in....

Edit
OK then...if you have never been on a motorway, I would seriously advise you to take some motorway lessons so that you know how to drive safely on the motorways, and it will also give you more confidence to do so...

My Nav system tells me what lane I should be in. However, I decided to follow it when I got close to my house because it always gave me different directions then how I usually go. Anyways, I ended up in a farmer's field. So, use the Nav system as a guide but don't follow it blindly. I'm sure it's fine for major autobahns, but not for small village roads.

? you don't need a sat nav to tell you which lane to be in. You should be in the nearside lane except when overtaking.

If you can't figure out what lane you should be in then please don't drive lady. Satnav is not a crutch for basic common(?)sense.
