Ok my aunt is dating someone with a black son, I am white, We were talking and the term black came up and he told me not to refer to him as black that he was colored, now this makes no sense to me since i thought the term colored was racist. He explained that he thinks the term colored is more appropriate since his ethnicity is haitian, jamaican, and white. He also said african american is not right either because that is steriotyping that every dark man is from Africa. IDK im really confused and i want to know what others think?????

actually theres nothing racists about calling anyone, black african chinese or colored or whatever. As long as its not said in a way that says to people that one group of people based on race is inferior then its nit. However some people are hyper sensitive. That would be like calling someone white racists, doesnt sound like it is does it? Actually jaimacans are majorly from africa ultimately also as well as haitian but i understand any what you mean. Your trying to say that not every dark skinned person is just of african american ethnecity.
Some people can get really hyper sensitive and i think its redicoulous but however some peope can take racism to far and thats why people get hyper sensitive to little things as just trying to identify people.

Calling someone colored sounds more ignorant than racist to me. However, I will agree with him on the term african american being wrong since it does suggest that blacks only have african ancestry which might be true for some, but it's definitely not true for me and plenty of others. I'm completely ok with being called black though since it's an attempt at describing skin color...

Being from the South, I was taught that calling someone colored has racist connotations. I think the phrase he is looking for is "person of color."

He is a person not a colour! Don't be a jerk, or is that just american culture.
