Well, hard drives eventually break down; if you hear one clicking in a different way than you're used to it's time to replace it FAST. Sometimes they do want more storage, and sometimes they just want to brag they have the best computer setup. A brand shiny new hard drive will run you from $50 to $400 depending on the size and type; your computer has to have a certain connection for different hard drives, so the "best" hard drive really depends on what you can fit onto it (protip: don't buy a hard drive until you know it will fit into your computer)

People replace hard drives because they can go out or slow down or they might just want more storage. Hard Drives have really come down in price and to be honest I'm really excited about the next market with hard drives going to solid state. Apple has made the leap in announcing this. Anyways best hard drive out there... Western Digital and u can find them very cheap look around at sites like newegg.com outpost.com pricewatch.com or tigerdirect.com.

Cost depends on what you need/want. SATA is more expensive than IDE (new technology against old technology). Also, the bigger the drive, typically the more expensive. Reasons for replacing a hard drive:

Current hard drive is dead/dying
Current drive is too small and they need more space
A person buys a new computer so it comes with a new HD

That's typically it. 3 main reasons why a person wants/need a new HD.

You get hard-drives to:

1. Replace defective. (hard drive crash)
2. Have more storage capacity

Cost about $100 - $200
Best one is Seagate
