I think that Champions League isn't played as a league because the teams participating in it play almost 50 matches in their domestic competitions. If they design the CHL as a league they must be playing at least 40 matches in the competition.
I dont think many players who can play 90 matches a season, not counting the international games.

It originally began as the European champions cup back in 1955/56 season, where only league winners could enter it, the format was changed in 1992 and renamed the UEFA champions league, it has since got bigger and bigger with more clubs allow to enter it from finishing 2nd 3rd & 4th in there leagues,It starts off with knock-out rounds home and away ties before it enters the group stages, it go's back to knock-out rounds when group stages are over, then its knockout rounds home and away till the final, one match on a neutral venue decides the winner,

Shouldn't be called the Champions League anyway as it isn't just the Champions of each league that enter but also the runners up and 3rd & 4th placed teams.
So it really should be done under the trade description act or
it should be renamed the ' Champions and also rans league'

It is not a knock out from the start. It becomes the knockout on reaching the knockout stages.
It begins as the league first with different groups contending for top spot - similar to a league!

By rule a league is a collective entity. In our case it is a group of European teams competing for a trophy while playing football. What else would call it?
