Hi,
In general, Egypt does not have many hostels nor 2 & 3 star hotels for a simple reasons. 5 star hotels are comparatively cheap, you can get a room for as little as $50 night and when you compare such rates to europe or the states it simply does not make much business sense to have 2 & 3 star hotels for lower rates since they still have a lot of fixed costs to pay, in other words it will never be profitable.
There is however a decent hotel is Zamalek, it is called President hotel (reference included), rate should be affordable especially if you are a long term resident.
What most students do is rent an apartment and share the expenses with a room mate. Apartment rentals range from $500-2000 depending of course on location, size, facilities etc. I think this is your best bet.
There aren't any sites however that you can use to search for room mate ads, but there are tons for rental and i will include them below. I think the best way of handling this is to actually stay in a hotel for a couple of weeks till you are able to rent an apartment of find a roommate.
There are a few magazines where such ads are regularly posted.

It's not confusing, but I think what you want to do may not be practical for you. Zamalek is a very good area which means there is nothing cheap there. I can tell you hotel names in Zamalek, but it's 5 or 4 stars or not economical for long stays. In Cairo you better mention the area you want to live in. It's not much understandable to say the west bank of the Nile in Cairo.
I can help you to get a nice hotel on the Nile suitable for long stays but not in Zamalek and I will not put the names here.
You can contact me if you like

Well I would recommend this small hotel, it's called ,
(May Fair). It's a small, cozy place in a quiet street in Zamalek. Also it's not far away from the busy streets in Zamalek, or central Cairo. Some friends of mine have stayed there.
It's cheap as well. You might try it for a couple of days/weeks till you are able to rent an apartement, if you like.
I have this website....

Cairo is one of many world's great megacities. As wonderful since it is crazy, and as full of historical finery because it is half dilapidated, Cairo is commonly a town that individuals love and hate in equivalent methods so learn in which group you is likely to be with the aid of that place hotelbye . In Cairo you may find, beyond the current hubbub, a record that spans centuries. Filled with vigour, Cairo is wherever you truly get a sense for Egyptian road life and number trip to Egypt is complete without a stay static in the town Arabs call Umm al-Dunya (The Mother of the World). The absolutely staggering number of antiquities shown in Cairo's Egyptian Museum causes it to be among the world's good museums and definitely a place for everybody's to visit.
