They can be required to provide some form of identification.
But they cannot be required to pay for that ID, because that would constitute a poll tax in violation of 24th Amendment.
Nor can the requirements for getting the ID put an undue burden on the right to vote, or result in any significant racial discrimination (prohibited by the 15th Amendment).
But if the ID can be easily and freely obtained, and if there are procedures in place to allow absentee voting if the person doesn't have time before the election, then the requirement is valid.

There should be, voter fraud is not taken seriously enough. But it's probably an issue best left to the states.
My state does require identification. It mostly pisses off the illegal aliens (and the Democrats they would have voted for).
It seems to me a perfectly reasonable safeguard against voter fraud. I believe those that oppose it -- and there are many, and they are very vocal about it -- operate purely out of self-interest and are disingenuous with their complaints.

Democrats got it STOPPED.
If voters had to show ID, it would cost the Democrats millions & millions of votes.
If there would have been HONEST ID checks last election, the Democrats wouldn't have taken over Congress.
THE DEMOCRATS WILL NEVER ALLOW IDs.
They can NEVER allow Honest Elections.
