Because with family/friends we feel safe, tucked in sort of speak, assured of their love; we know they love us for us. With strangers, you have no gage of what they are about and so you do everything you can to gain their approval.

I know of two reasons--one positive, the other very negative.

One is the positive case I argue--informality; a level of expecting to be understood, accepted, and to be able, in short, not to have to be totally formal, etc.
If this means "taking our closest for granted'", I say that's a good thing--if not carried too far... It's different than "being on our formal behavior", 'dressing up" and "being careful of all our manners"; it's a lower 'register' of behavior that two people who know each other pretty well can use.

The second I claim is bad. It's a sign that instead of being more understanding of and closer to his/her friends, a micro-controlling dictator personality will abuse those closest; or else expect them by extra-sensory perception to read his latest wishes and comply; such a person has no talent for ideas and wants to collect and manipulate believer slaves--and of course one doesn't have to be friendly, just or nice to slaves; because they're there to do the dirty work.

Family is family we should not have to keep our guard up all the time, though these days our family units are not as they ones were and family will betray each other faster then strangers these days.
Friends are supposed to care for us as well, though these days this too has fallen to thee waste side.
Strangers we have always had to be weary of. They do not care about us therefor will do crappy things to us.

I hope, just hope the family units go back to where they belong some day. One can dream right lol!

Because we know friends and family better and we know they will forgive us easier than a stranger. We do not know what a stranger will do if we are rude or mean. Some might just glare some might pull a gun.

Because we all need to have someone to let out our frustrations upon who will let us get away with it most of the time. We're all bullies at heart.
