I live in Dallas, Tx . Something is eating the bark off my live oak tree. At first i thought it might be woodpeckers but there not just holes, its holes and sometimes strips of bark, and i dont think its deep enough to be woodpeckers.

Deer will eat young bark and buds.Contact your local extension service office and ask them.

Definitely not deer...the holes are too deep and round to be made by deer...deer would tear the bark in strips...and they can only reach up so far. It's either some sort of boring insect or bird. You would notice the noise if birds were pecking into your tree...have you heard them? (There are a lot of holes in that tree...and it would cause quite a racket.)

I also don't think it's termites. Termites bore long thin tunnels...and often go undetected under the bark of the trees...or inside wall timbers...they don't make neat round holes.

It does look like woodpecker damage at first but it could also be due to a beetle, boring into the tree.. Its definitely not squirrels tho.. unfortunately i cant be of much more help, as i am from the UK and its possibly something that we get very rarely.. but my moneys on a boring beetle of some sort.. hope that is of some help..

It could be any number of "pecking" birds. They are looking for bugs under the bark. I would contact your local county extension office, they would be able to help you with this problem.
