I need to be able to start accepting credit cards at craft fairs but I do not yet have a merchant account, I understand these are difficult to obtain if your business is not up and running (but how do you get it up and running without one!!). Is it possible to use a manual swipe machine and if so do you need a merchant account still or can these be processed via paypal? I'd appreciate any helpful answers! Any other ideas would be great. Thank you.

Try Worldpay or Metacharge, they will take u on as you begin your biz, they have average charges of 4% plus 30p per transaction and a monthly fee around £30, it's all in one, they process the cards and have a built in gateway, no seperate merchant acc needed. Then u can transfer the funds to any bank.

You do not need a swipe machine if you do not want to use one. Lots of Buisnesses still use the old carbon copy machines and signitures, you do not have to use Chip and Pin unless you are set up to.
Banks still have to Honour the transaction and it is still safer than chip and pin.
