I just returned from a 3 month Europe vacation. In general, the people on the street will treat you fair. Even in France where I worried about that, English got me everywhere and there was no visible reaction.
It was somewhat different when I was involved in conversations in an intimate and private setting. The American Governments policy including the head of State is criticized unmerciful. By every citizen in the EU.
I must also say that I felt I needed to correct some speakers, because they did not differentiate between the Government and the American people.
If you want to get along...do not discuss the Iraq war. Everyone I talked to agrees that it is fought for the wrong reason, and everyone blames the Head of State for all the loss of live, not only for the American Soldier, but also for the thousands of deaths of the Iraqi people.
I think, as long as you don't go around waiving your flag, you should have a great time.
I hope I was of some help.
