I live in Ohio too.You can ride on your own,No night driving or interstates with a permit, not allowed rider on back.Must wear a helmet,
You have to go the DMV and pick up your permit package. It has study material in it.Cost is $19.50.When you're ready go take you test on a computer at the test facility. After you get your permit you can make an appointment to take the riding part.
It's all easy.Good luck.

Apply for your learners permit and then enroll in a motorcycle safety course, they will teach you all the basic ridings skills you need to take the exam for your license. Also Yahoo "Christian Motorcyclist Association" locate the CMA Chapter near you, you will find many of the members will be very helpful in assisting in you training. They are a great group of people whose goals are to help other motorcyclist.
Here in PA they offer free motorcycle safety course and provide motorcycles for the course, They are 250's and most of them are Honda Shadows. These are good training cycles and are not very expensive. However, if this will be your first bike buy used and pay cash, get the experience of riding before moving up to bigger and more expensive bikes. I have had friends who bought big bikes like Goldwings and rode only a few times then selling them at a loss because they weren't ready for a big bike. Nothing wrong with starting small and working up to bigger later on. In fact the smaller bike will normally sell quicker when you are ready to move up, then use the money for your next bike.

Yeah, in South Carolina you can ride during the daytime with the learner's permit, but need a license to ride after the sun goes down.

Since bill b lives in your state, he should know better than I.
In NH with a learner's permit, you ride alone (no passengers), during daylight only. It would be a good idea to go out with an experienced person riding behind. Learning alone is possible, but some one watching can help with constructive criticism. In addition, they can cover your back door.

Usually you can take the written test to get a learners permit and you may renew the learners permit, you can borrow a small bike to take the riding test,no no one has to ride with you on a learners permit.

Good question, I'm not 100% sure, but live in NC, and would almost guarantee that you need to have get insurance for any bike you plan on riding on public roads....but again, I don't know that to be the case.
