I work for IBM & can tell you that approx 85% of the company's desktop & notebook branch were sold to a Chinese company ..."Lenovo".
IBM still owns about 15%.
Reason ... the consumer line was a very small part of our product line (approx 5%) & showed little financial gain.
IBM chose to focus on business hardware rather than the consumer products.
IBM still owns & makes the high end Intellistations as PCs & of course the Server line.
regards,
Philip T

Actually, IBM sold its PC business to a company that is now called Lenovo. That includes its manufacturing in Greenock, Scotland, and Raleigh, N.C. Its U.S. headquarters are in White Plains, N.Y. But the President of Lenovo and the Chairman operate from China, possibly Shanghai.
All this happened well before Vista came out.

I'm going to guess that when Lenova bought IBM's PC group they felt a right to change the name. IBM owns a 18.9 percent stake in Lenovo and will consider Lenova a preferred provider of PCs to IBM.

They sold their portable PC line to Lenovo about a year and a half ago; I think Lenovo had always been involved in ThinkPad manufacture to some degree though.
