I am genuinly curious. As some know my birthday was last week. Had a SUPER one thanks in part to a few friends on here, Sunshine and "you know who you are." I just received a package from another super friend on here. A box of rocks,,yep rocks. TO SOME. Some of these are petrified wood that is certified and 16,000 yrs old that he mined himself (that is more important than the stones). The stones themselves are MAGNIFICENT and will become pieces to be remembered and fine enough to become jewelry. They were sent with great care and thought. This friend will never truly understand how much this has meant to me.

SSSSOOOO. My question is, what present have you received that when you first say it, it may not sound like much, but when you give the "history" or thought behind it becomes a treasured gift to be passed on?

When I was younger (around age five) my mother and father were flat broke when my birthday came around. They felt horrible, but they were determined to get me something for my birthday. My mother went into her closet, and retrieved an old record player that she'd had when she was a teenager. Along with it was a box of 45rpm records from the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. She wrapped them all up and put a bow on top.

When I opened the present on my birthday, I was less than excited. It didn't look like a toy, and it wasn't brightly colored or decorated with cartoon characters. Mom showed me how to use it though, and pretty soon I had developed a liking for several of the records! Mom sang along with them, and soon I was too! I learned some of the greatest music of our time before I was even six years old. I knew who the Byrds were, Buddy Holly, The Everley Brothers, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Fats Domino, Seals and Crofts, The Four Seasons...and many more! My favorite of the records was a Beatles record of "Here Comes the Sun", and my mother taught me how to harmonize along with George Harrison....my first dive into singing, which I still enjoy today.

This was the beginning of my love affair with music. Today, I can name almost any artist from the 50's and 60's simply by hearing a few bars of a song. When I hear the Beach Boys, instead of seeing a bunch of old guys, I see the spinning spiral of the Capitol record label....turning slowly in my head.

I love you mom!!!
