is he able to walk on it? does he seem to be in discomfort? i would say if you are concerned then take him to see a vet right away just in case. you wouldn't want the little guy (or girl) to be in pain.

Hi,

If you could afford it, then a trip to the vet would be indicated. The vet may not be able to do much in terms of repairing the leg (should it be broken): a hamster is such a small creature that stabilisation of the fracture (cast/surgery) is impossible. However, the vet would be able to alleviate the pain.

I suggest you give the emergency vet a call (free). It may be that you have got some pain killers at home that could help. Prepare what you think is appropriate and contact the vet for advices.

Good luck

I dont think its broken as these little creatures legs do feel a bit funny and as if they could be broken. Check the little guys leg over and make sure it isnt sore in any way, how is the foot? any sign of injury etc, could ur hamster have caught something on its foot and it has tried to nibble it off and has possibly took a chunk out of its foot hence it keeps the leg / foot up.
Is there any irregular movement to the suspect leg, meanning if u look at other leg does the suspect leg appear to move in a same manner as the good one, if there is a fracture u will see that the limb may be deformed.f u use the cocktail stick, keep it as small as poss length wise make sure there are no sharp edges, cut surgical tape into very thin slithers, dont overdo it with the tape as the removal could distress the animal, on removing the tape, soak it in tepid water and remove very slowly. Use non waterproof surgical tape.

What makes u think its broken?have u stood on it by accident? unless it caught its leg on the cage wire somehow and fell back dangling on its leg which may or may not break it. am not a vet but I am an ex ambulance service ambulanceman. Good luck

Ps f poss if broken make a tiny splint using a cut down cocktail stick held on by surgical tape, but be very gentle and not too tight with tape, dont try using thread or tiny cord as u will cut circulation to leg ending up with limb dying, gangerine or even fall off.

If you are in the UK and you cannot afford the vet try the RSPCA they will help for free or a reduced fee.
But also check with a local vet as well because they wouldn't charge a lot for a hamster.
Try and get some sort of treatment as even if it doesn't seem to be in pain if its broken something it will be and no treatment is cruel.

Most often if you cater to him the leg will heal on it own. Make sure there is nothing he can fall off of, and that there are no other hamsters with him. Keep an eye on him and if it does not heal within max a month, and he still does not walk on it and he looks in pain i would advise to take him to a vet.

You should take him to a vet. If you can't afford that you can try making a splint out of a chopstick and vet wrap. That's what we did with lambs that had a broken leg. A vet's the best thing though of course.

take all levels out of the cage, and put extra bedding in it for him.
make sure he can reach his food and water, so if he wants to stay lying down, he can.
also, vitamin drops in his water would be a good idea, as well as a mineral lick/stone from a pet store. that will keep his calcium levels up, and should help it heal soon.
you need to take the levels out of his cage so that he can't use his leg much. if it is broken and he is using it, then it wil stay broken and won't heal.

that truly sucks. that's often complicated while an animal dies and while injuries ensue. do no longer blame your self in view that's what it became, an twist of fate. you probably did what you could for him and that i do no longer think of the vehicle journey harm him anymore than he already became. No offense meant by using this, yet purely out of interest, do you consume meat? in view that is something to sense in charge approximately (think of ~ninety 3 lifeless animals a 12 months), in case you do. lower back, i do no longer recommend to exacerbate any discomfort you would be feeling approximately your hamster and that i think your loss (I even have had countless hamsters and understand the attachment). purely save it in concepts while you're no longer veg. while you're, bypass you!
