The United States first became involved in Vietnam during World War II. During World War II the United States have formed an alliance with the Viet Minh against Japanese forces and in fact the United States actually formally recognized Vietnamese independence in August of 1945 until France decided it wanted to reclaim control of its former colony at the end of the war.

The first US troops to enter Vietnam (post-Geneva peace conference) was in June 1954 under the command of Colonel Edward Lansdale (who had previously been sent as an advisor to the French in 1953 http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/COLDlansdale.htm ). It was a mixed group of intelligence officers and combat troops who were sent into the field, but they are under orders not personally become involved in combat.

Good Luck!!!
