"The Thief" by Meghan Whalen Turner. Or..."The Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkien.

The first is just a novel that has always charmed me. It's about a young thief named Gen who is forced to go try and steal Hamiathe's Gift, a small stone that entitles the bearer of which to rule the neighboring country of Eddis. Gen is a witty, sneaky little fellow and I just love him. There are two sequels to this book; "The Queen of Attolia" and "The King of Attolia" where Gen is just as crafty as ever. I even had a slight book-crush on him for a while...which is kind of wierd, but oh well.

And "The Lord of the Rings"....just because, in my opinion, this book is the birth of modern fantasy. If you look at many fantasy novels these days, they reek of Tolkienistic fantasy: elves, dwarves, dragons, magic rings and swords, wizards, etc. Sure, these were seen previously in some works, but Tolkien took the ancient legends and fairy tales, reworked them...and created a new genre of fantasy. Awesome.

Where to begin?
'Twilight' and 'New Moon', by Stephenie Meyer
'Jane Eyre' Charlotte Bronte
'Pride and Prejudice' Jane Austen
Midnight in the Dollhouse (a kid's book, but I love it nonetheless)
And my favorite authors (I read way too much):
Stephenie Meyer, Nora Roberts, Christine Feehan, Emma Holly, Anne Rice, and... ok, I can't list them all. But that's just the tip of the iceburg.

With respect to anyone choosing Greene, Dickens or Cervantes, I must go with Lawrence Sterne's Tristram Shandy, a delightful medley of birth, life, death, and the inconsequence of all. This novel was thought unfilmable, as it was. Someone took an admirable stab at it a year or two ago, but really it remains unfilmable. You must read it; what other book do you know of that contains an entire page in black?

One of my favorite books of all time is Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers. It was an assigned read in high school, and it turned out to be one of the best books I've ever read.

Pretty much the first 3 books by Sue Grafton. A is for Alibi, etc. I have read them a few times each and just love them. However a few of her more recent ones have been a disappointment.
