Respect is earned. It is not given lightly...especially in the work environment. Respect your Mother & Father? Yes. They brought you into the world. But what if they abuse you?

I've dealt with disrespect by asking the person what the REAL problem is. Again, people who act this way are usually threatened by something you've done. Feel that you may have usurped them in some way. Ask them, in a non-threatening manner and then honestly listen to their response.

to receive respect from others is not a right. It is a privilege!

if you walk around the planet expecting people to respedt you then you will be severely and sadly disappointed. too often people think they deserve respect because of who they are or what they have achieved or what they own. no one deserves respect from anyone else simply because of luck of birth, ie born into the 'right' family, or because of past achievements, resting on old laurels really doesnt deserve respect, and as for how much you own or have in the world is no measure of deserving respect....

respect is a fluid thing that is given by the respector when the respected deserve it and can be just as easily taken away when the respector no longer sees the respected as deserving it. so you may receive respect from others for a period of time and then a change in attitude, belief, or behaviour on the part of the respector or the respected can warrant a withdrawal of that respect.

if you are seeing those around you as disresepceting you then you are working on the presumption that you deserve for them to respect you... and that they should know it...

I would not approach any situation with a presumption of respect either given or received... I would instead on each occasion be very aware that if I want respect I need to earn it and continue to earn it.. and do so knowing that there will always be some people on the earth who will never respect me no matter what I do or dont do but regardless of that fact I should behave in a respectful and respectable manner because that is how I want to be in the world.

in this manner I never have to deal with disrespect. others willingness or ability to respect does not affect me... or my behaviour.

to me respect is treating others the way you would want to be treated. or simply taking into account the other person's rights and feelings. to me all people should be respectful to each other weather they deserve it or not.

everyday I deal with disrespect. i work with teenagers many of them have major behavior issues which often means displaying behaviors that are disrespectful. how do I deal with disrespect?? sometimes I ignore it and other days I point out a more respectful way to handle situations. when dealing with adults who are disrespectful I just try to ignore it and assume they have a reason for their poor behavior.
