no need to be arfaid, the instructor has dual controls. so although you think your doing really well, mostly its them doing the work for the first lesson or two while you get the feel of the car and get used to the steering.
they will take you somewhere quiet for the first lesson and get you familiar with the controls of the car. most instructors will pace the lessons to suite you.

I made sure I was up, relaxed and ready by the time I was to meet My Instructor, then had a drive around for a little while to get the feel of the car, a quick run over the questions about maintenace and things like parking etc. Then parked up close to test centre to have a few mins rest and chill before going in.
On way out a deep breath, smile and look happy try not to be nervous or look scared, you will fail. Think Positive, once driving, listen, remain alert, and just be yourself.
I had 6 faults and passed the test on the first go.
Great Feeling.

Your first lesson will probably concentrate on making sure you know how to steer, accelerate, brake, and use the controls (lights, horn, blinkers, seat adjustments, mirrors, etc)

The purpose of the lessons is for you to actually get comfortable operating the machine.

Take it seriously. No radio, no distractions, no conversations. Listen carefully to the instructor but do not look at them. Even if you need to ask a question keep your hands on the wheel, your feet on the pedals, your eyes on the road (including the mirrors 50% of the time) and your mind on driving.

Having learned to use a manual car in My parents driveway, the instructor had Me doing 60mph in My first lesson. I passed my test 5 lessons later. If You have no previous experience of driving, Your first lesson will involve learning Your way around the inside of the car(lights, indictators etc.) and possibly get up to second gear, it all depends on how quickly You take to driving.

Don't be freaked out...you will likely be on a closed course (or in a parking lot) for your first lesson. If you are learning through a driver's education course, they won't put you out on the street until you have some basic knowledge. Just make sure that you stay relaxed...driving is super easy.

Good luck!

I don't know what they're talking about, but for behind the wheel, you learn the basics of how to turn, gears, mirrors, things like that. Then you drive around a bit, get used to it, and *I* drove home from there but I'm not sure how many behind the wheel classes put you on the road the first time...

I hit a stop sign my first time. I also learned that its fun to hit things on purpose once in while. I crashed a barricade with my SUV once because the people who put it up had no right to put it there (private construction company with no permit to block off the alley) and it was in my way.

My first lesson was from my mother. You will do fine. I am sure they will go over safety etc. Just listen and do your best.

Drove round the block a few times.
I thought it would of been all talking on my first lesson.
So when he said "ok jump in this side"
I nearly freaked and thought
"have i got a psycho instructor"
but it was good and i felt good afterwards.
good luck relax.....

Permit came in the mail 3 days after my 16th birthday.
grabbed my dad and went off to the station and got my license.

but- I'm a guy, so I didn't really need to 'learn' how to drive, it just came naturally. YMMV.
