England is BY FAR the most expensive country to travel by train. If you are only going one way buy a ticket. If you are doing more than 2 train trips, get the railpass.

If you are money conscious, you can take a bus, it usually only takes about 1-2 hours more.

It takes about 2 1/2 hours by train. Prices vary - you may be able to get a cheaper ticket by booking in advance. The national rail website will say what tickets are available if you do a search for the dates that you want.

However, if you're not too worried about how long it'll take you, going by coach is a lot cheaper, especially if you book in advance. I recently did a return trip from Manchester to London for £7 using National Express.

It takes 2 1/4 hours (a bit longer at weekends).

Travelling peak hours is horrificly expensive (nearly £300 return). If you can leave after 9:30 and avoid the peak return hours (from about 2-6:30 pm) it is a lot cheaper. The walk up SAVER return is about £55.

You can book online cheaper - and two singles are often the cheapest. You must book 1 day in advance (some tickets longer), and there are a limited number of tickets. A drawback is that you MUST travel on the train you book for.

If you book in advance like over 2 weeks you can pay as little as 10-12 pounds for a one way fare from london euston to manchester piccadilly. The journey takes about 2 hours and 11 minutes via Virgin Trains.

If you go by Virgin trains departing from London fast to Manchester it should only take 2 and half hours (so Virgin reckons) but be warned it could be expensive if you book on the day. If you book way in advance your ticket price comes down.
If you go by coach your looking at 6 hour trip but at about £30.00 weekend ticket booked in advance it would be cheaper on the pocket. But you might end up sitting next to some nutters, plus you may have to stop and change coaches with all the rest of the passengers!
