Ok...I work in a really small office. We only have 6 employess so we really have to work WITH each other. Our Accountant is an alcholic. Who will tell you he has a problem & needs help, and then change his mind & decide he doesn't. He tells me ALL of his business...too much in fact. His girlfriend will call me & ask advice about him & one of her kids that worked her briefly. Now I'll admit, at first I tried to help...my fault. After a while I became resentful. This is where I work, I don't come here to listen to everyone who works her & their girlfriend, and her kids problems...so now I ignore all of them. I am polite but I do not respond to extra conversation. I do my work.
Well...I get an email asking for a donation to help them help a family member who had an operation. I am just seething with anger...I don't know what to say or how to respond. Am I supposed to emotionally & now financially support the whole dang family?? I haven't seen my co worker yet but what do I say?

detach! yeah ur too nice. i made friends with a guy at work a month ago and last week he asked me for a loan... $3,500!!!!! i said no. keep doing what ur doing, ur doing alright!!!

There are some people who will drop their problems at your feet and expect you to solve them. Unfortunately, it appears that you are too nice and these people are leaning on you. Tell this employee that you cannot take on his personal problems and focus on your own business and your job. If he tries to engage you in another personal conversation about his problems, excuse yourself and stay away from him. Do the same with the girlfriend. Don't engage her in conversation, tell her you have work to do and hang up. Cut the umbilical cord before things get further out of control.
