I found him as a lost soul of a teen. He wanted to be cool to his friends and would do the opposite of mature and wouldnt care if he got caught. This probably has something to do with when his father left him and his mom for another woman (causing him complete hatred of him and himself); he, however, shows a softer side towards his mother.
When Jamie comes along, she somehow has the ability to "straighten him out". He then accomplishes many things, here are some:
-being successful over a lead in a play (which he was forced to join)
-being able to get persmission from the pastor of dating Jamie (just by reffering to scriptures that pastor had spoken in the chapel)
-Building a telescope so he and Jamie could see the comet she's longed to see.
-Being accepted to medical school.
-Being Jamie's miracle.
He gave up hanging out with his friends (who have tried to connect with him since then. In the book, each of his friends apologize to Jamie).
He gave up his wrongs to fulfill his dreams because of Jamie's encouragement and inspiration. Once someone has inspired you, your life would never be the same...

I think he's confused.... but when he falls in love he gives it his all.... he worked so hard to make her list of impossible things come true...
