well stems cells don't have a set fate yet, for example skins cells when they divide they will become another skin cell, stem cells however when they divide they become stems cells these cells receive ques from the cell membranes surrounding then, these cells basically tell the cell what to become, if you were able to extract stem cells and place them in the spinal column theoretically new nerve cells could be regenerated.
