The election of Abraham Lincoln as U.S. president marked the beginning of the secession crisis. South Carolina was the first to secede, on December 20, 1860. The other states of the Deep South (Georgia, Alambama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Texas) voted to join South Carolina in secession throughout January 1861. In February 1861, the seceded states met in Mobile, Alabama to draft a constitution for a new Confederate States of America.

On April 12, 1861, South Carolina's militia attacked the U.S. federal Fort Sumter. The Northern Union responded by calling up a mobilization for war. This is what convnced the states of the Upper South (Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky) also to secede and join the Confederacy by June 1861.

There had never been an attempt a secession by a state before 1860. However, in the 1830s during the administration of President Andrew Jackson, South Carolina threatened to secede and attempted to claim the right to "nullify" any U.S. federal law that it disagreed with. Jackson reacted quite forcefully and South Carolina backed down. This is known as the Nullification Crisis.

I would only add to the above that seven of the states seceded before Lincoln was even inaugurated on March 4, 1861. (Inaugurations were later in those days. )
