how long would it really take for a smart 12 year old boy to learn how to properly play a couple of riffs? My son pestered me to get guitar lessons which btw are really expensive, he's been attending for 6 months, 3 hours a week, and he just plays scales! What can i do?

He may have chosen to concentrate on scales... lead guitar. Ask his teacher if this is what happened.

It could be that his teacher is a classical player and as such he concentrates on a lot of single notes rather than chords at first, so if your son chooses perhaps he can ask his teacher to take the lessons on a different path.

It is uncommon for any teacher to concentrate only on scales and ignore chords.

He needs to practice outside of his lesson time. By this time, if he has been practicing he should have a good idea of his hands position on the fretboard. He should also know some chords and the like. Then all he has to do is just mix things up a little bit with what he already knows. Have fun with it.
