Rubbing mayonaisse into the white spot works really well.
Then just wipe clean and polish.

I don't know about the mayo, but if you use very fine steel wool and then some buffing compound you can get the spot out. It sounds like the finish was not polyurethane. This is water resistant. Could be varnish or poly acrylic. Good luck and you should enjoy the shine.
