Yes you should use a pump, empty it down as far as you can with the pool pump then go the rest of the way with a submersible pump. you must take care when emptying an in ground pool as it depends on the type you have you should never leave it empty for very long, the outside pressure of the surrounding ground may cause it to do several things,
1. it could bulge out of the ground.
2. it could start to crack on bottom
in any case plan it so you can do your repairs quickly, and fill it up, worst case scenario you should be able to empty, clean, repair, paint, and fill in about 24 hrs.

Rent a gas powered pump! They kick assss! Typical pump rate of about 80 gpm @20' lift and should run about an hour per gallon of gas; you can do the math per your pool size. An electric pump CANT touch that.(unless you have access to 480 volts).
