and i dont know how to go about replacing it. i think it might have fallen into the trash by my cat or something. please click the respectable link to see the style of the thermostat and let me know what you think i should do! (sorry, we just moved and the dust is from the previous tenants.) thank you!

yup 20$ at homedepot. they usually take 2 AA batts. red to r and white to w. dont get one that has that mercury bulb get all digital.. you dont have to worry about getting it perfectly level (the electronic one that is)

I would go ahead and replace it. By the look of it, the thermostat is heat only and would only have two wires. A basic thermostat for heat only does not cost very much and are available at the home center. There is no need to turn the electric to the furnace off as thermostats are low voltage so there is no concern about getting shocked while replacing the thermostat.

It's an old Honeywell stat. They still make the same model, but you'll never get a replacement cover.
It's a 2 wire, heat only stat, so I would just get a new stat at a homecenter.
Either the same mercury type will work or get an electronic one with batteries.

I would replace it with honeywell 5200 pro vision easy to control and install good luck
