There is a whole branch of chemistry dedicated to hydrocarbons, known as organic chemistry. This includes the simplest of gases known as methane or CH4 up to the most complex ring and chain structures usually best illustrated in the petroleum industry. Elemental carbon is also graphite, diamonds and bucky balls.
