I am 9 months pregnant and was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. My OBGYN prescribed Nitrofurantoin which is also known as Macrobid. When picking up the prescription on the warning it clearly states "DO NOT use use this medication when near the end of pregnancy (38-42 weeks) or at the time of labor and delivery. Doing so may cause a certain blood disorder called hemolytic anemia in your baby." I called my Doctor and she said it's fine, everyone takes it while pregnant. I called the pharmacist and he said "DO NOT TAKE". How can two healthcare professionals be so contradictary when the issue is so important?

Listen to the pharmacist. It has been my experience that they are more well versed on medication that the docotrs. I have even had doctors perscribe medication I am allergic to. Sometimes the benifits out weight the risks, but not in this case. Go see another doctor, or go to the er (and don;t feel stupid) the4re is medicine that you can take while pregnant. I don't remember what it is called, just that it is much more expensive than what you would usually get. Please get a second opinion, and get the proper meds. Good luck to you.

I think the Pharmacist was thinking about Septra DS (another common drug for aUTI) instead of Macrobid. I'll check it out tomorrow at work and get back.
