The Resoration occured in 1660. This was the return of the English Monarchy. Before this Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans had overturned the monarchy in the Civil War . Cromwell established the "Commonwealth" with himself as "Lord Protector". After his death his son proved inefficient.
In 1660 Charles II became King of England. So the Restoration was the period following the return of the monarchy.

In 1660 the Comonwealth of England nd Scotland was over and the House of Stuart with Charles II was restored as the reigning house in England and Scotland (Ireland was under English rule and techically England and Scotland were separate kingdoms, united under the same sovereign)
