I love horror, mystery, real edge of your seat stuff, I want a thick dark book that keeps me turning pages, I want to feel what the people in the book feel, see what they see, I don't want ski fi or cavemen, I want Vampires, Witches, etc. without all the Merlin back drops, and magic wands.
I've read all the Ann Rice books, I did like the Witching Hour, but am looking for something a little darker, bigger, better in the same area.
Has such a book been written? or will I have to do it myself?

Hm...That's tricky. Try "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley. That's a vampire book set in modern times. I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for though. I can't remember if I thought it was scary while reading it...but I did enjoy it.

A good way to find books is to go to Amazon.com, and search for a book that you KNOW you like, and then scroll way down to the bottom of the book's main page to the Listmania! section, where other readers like yourself have made lists of books that they like. The good lists will say WHY they liked them. For example, just with a quick browse I found a list of 50 vampire books, organized by describing the authors. I'll stick the link on the end here so you can click on it if you want.

stephen King: 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, It:
Peter Straub: Ghost Story, Shadowland:
If you want your frights worse because more believable, try:
Thomas Harris: Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs (don't bother with Hannibal/Hannibal Rising).

You'll probably want to do it yourself, but if you want a different twist on vampires, read The Southern Vampire novels, the first of which is Dead Until Dark.

Have fun!
