To expand their lungs to get use to breathing oxygen.

The whole experience of being born and coming out and breathing for the first time and all the commotion going around, etc. I assume it's all new and scary and traumatic for them. However, baby crying after being born is good because it tells us that the baby is ok.

they were warm and cosy (if a bit cramped) and in the dark - suddenly they're pushed out through a very narrow space (so tight it squishes their skulls) into the cold, usually with bright lights, and have to breathe oxygen for the first time... if you've been without air for a moment (something really stank, for instance) you take a deep breath - babies need to get lots of air in fast, and had a stressful time getting there... you'd cry to! (bet you even did!)

and actually, I was one who didn't cry - thank goodness for being born in a hospital with decent equipment, cuz they had to suction my lungs out before I *could* breathe

I'd cry too if I'd just been squeezed out of another person...... I think that's why we can't remember being babies....too traumatic...!
