This all depends on your definition of algebra. As a teacher, I know algebra technically starts in kindergarten. It is the recognition of patterns, shapes, and numbers. Algebra is more than just 3Y=30, what does Y equal. I know this might not help to much, but at least you know that you have probably done some algebra and you should be ready for next year! (The algebra you are thinking of does typically start anywhere from 6th to 8th grade.)

Believe it or not, algebra is actually introduced as early as the first grade level in missing factor problems. As far as taking a class specifically in algebra, most states require this course by eighth grade.

If a student is mathmatically inclined in any grade I believe it would be more helpful to encourage and strengthen this than to wait. Any grade the student is capable of understanding concepts mathmatically is good.

I started algebra in 7th grade.
However, parts are taught early; I'm teaching some to my 3rd graders right now.
