I'm not sure why "mom" isn't the one having this discussion with her, but as for my daughter, just being in the same house with me while she was growing up taught her alot about it. She had her own terms for it from the time she could talk. But as a single mom with just her for almost 10 years, it made for very close quarters and no secrets. So when it came time to explain the how's and why's she already had a pretty good understanding.
In your case, I would suggest a trip to the library. Get a good Anatomy book and show her pictures of the reproductive system. Explain to her the differences in sanitary products and how they are used. Whatever you do, don't let on if you feel uncomfortable with the discussion or she will only feel that much more uncomfortable. You will see, when she feels she can trust you to talk to her about this, she will come to you about much more important stuff.

Just tell her that when you bleed you become a woman and she is now able to make babies and get pregnant if she has sex.
