My doctor prescribed Metronidazole 500mg to treat a "strong yeast infection". I researched on the internet and found that it can actually cause yeast. But, when I called the doctor's office and a pharmacist to inquire they both said Metronidazole / Flagyl can be used to treat a vaginal yeast infection. Does this sound right?

no, metronidazole is not for yeast. Perhaps you have bacterial vaginosis? Metronidazole would be good for that.
I have huge doubts that your doctor AND pharmacist were both wrong on this one. Are you telling us everything?
