I need help narrowing down my thesis statement.?

I have to write a 10-15 page research paper on the topic of modern ireland. Next week is my spring break and i plan to work on it then. I have tried to come up with a thesis statement but i can only choose broad topics. I need help narrowing them down. please help!! i was thinking of writing about the role of women during the irish famine. I can't narrow it down. i was also thinking of writing about the role of the irish in the american civil war. Can ya'll please help me narrow them down or give me some ideas..

I think the writing about the role of women in Ireland during the famine could be very interesting to read and research. You may also be able the stretch it out farther.

Just keep in mind during the famine there were two distinct groups of women those that were Catholic and those that were Quakers. And both would have had very different roles. it might be interesting to compare the differences.
