Sorry, I don't agree with the answers above. It's much easier, and more accurate if you start with a side, measure from floor to the bottom of your jamb header, and add 1/4"( for reveal) then do your top piece of molding by mitering one side(the same side you previously cut), hold in place and mark your opposite side,(remember to add your 1/4" for the reveal), then measure from floor to top piece of molding, It's the fastest and most accurate way to trim any door.

Yeah, start on the left side, go the top, and then the right side. I've done a lot of doors and windows and this is the best way to do it. Power miter saw, no doubt. Don't forget the 1/4 inch reveal.

Use a mitre box, to get perfect 45* cuts.
Set your top section first, using a spirit level and measuring your architrave from outside cnr to cnr.
Mark the 2 sides with the spirit level and pencil, and measure from the highest point down.
Allow for carpeting or tiles, if these still have to be installed.

I'm with BMW on this do the side casing first and mark the top. Marking is more accurate than measuring. Hand miter boxes suck. Use a power miter.

I agree with above. But if you can't afford a power saw, you can buy a miter box with saw for about $12. at lowe's. I used it to make a frame around my vanity mirror & it turned out great. Not hard at all.

Tom Man, both answers are great but it doesn't have to be perfect if your going to paint, your gonna caulk that 45 and you'll never see any imperfections. Good luck Les the painter
