im not really talking about extras, but rather ones who aren't lead actors but have important roles. (think of scott caan from oceans 11 and into the blue..etc).i assume they don't make too much, but would it be weird if they were doing other odd jobs while looking for another project?

Many actors wait tables, work at retail stores, etc. Some do regional theatre. An actor will always be auditioning, and at that stage will get the part about 2% of the time. Once they become "superstars" they will be offered or asked to play certain roles most of the time. So whatever they to do need to support themselves inbetween roles, they do.

Scott Caan doesn't need any odd jobs. He's been making several films per year for a number of years. He makes well above the SAG scale rate which is $737 per day or $2500 (or so) per week. A film like that takes around 4 weeks. (My source below is a few years out of date, and the numbers are higher.) Plus he gets residuals; whenever they sell a DVD of any of his films he gets a cut.

Like I said, he makes more than the scale rate; he makes at least $50,000 per film and perhaps much more. He's not doing any odd jobs.

The actors you've never heard of, the ones who do have speaking parts but only a few lines and have names like "Guard #3", they do end up waiting tables or working temp jobs. But any actor important enough for you to have heard of him isn't doing any of that.

In New York struggling actors, work as waiters, temp employees, proof-readers, legal secretaries, secretaries, nannies, dog-walkers, and Real Estate Agents, piano teachers, acting teachers, or, whatever jobs with which they can make a living.

They probably get a fair bit from those jobs, otherwise they'd quit. I think in their spare time they go on auditions like the rest of them. Just like any other job you have to keep at it to be successful.
