I see a lot of magazines showing mirrors being used in the garden for accent and I like the look. I would like to add one to my garden, but I'm confused about whether the mirrors are supposed to stay put year round (some look awfully permanent in their setups) or are they only meant to be seasonal? If they're meant for year-round use, do I have to look for a special weather-proof glass or will any mirror do? Thanks!

I've seen them too but they aren't glass mirrors. The potential for glass to break is great in any outdoor area and in zone 5 with the freeze and thaws, there would be greater risk.

Your choice. Glass is in its nature weather-proof. It's the BACK side of a mirror that may suffer from the elements. But a mirror that is "aging" may give you that rustic, "antique" element in your garden as well. So the fact that a permenant mirror does not stay pristine may be a plus. It just depends on your taste.

If you use a mirror that is important to you to maintain well, you might conside putting it out only temporarily during mild weather. If you use "found" or otherwise cast-off mirrors, go ahead and leave them. You can replace as necessary after 5 or 10 years (when it has gotten to an "antiquing" stage that is more than your liking, or when you mood changes.

I would put it away in the winter times. I am in zone 5/6 and I put all my decorations away in the fall and then put them out again each spring. The stands that they are put on may be permanent, but I'm guessing that the feature is put away in the winter months. Check the box to see if it needs to be put away in certain weather conditions.
