Is it just a slang used by people today who can't say the entire word; gasoline?

English language is full of contractions like that. If you think about the speech you use everyday, you'll find yourself very often using words like that.

gas is the first syllable, it saves time - like plane instead of airplane (or old-school aeroplane) and phone instead of telephone... not that we can't say the whole word, just that we'd rather move on to the next words and get them over with
