My life turned on the phrase, "excessive refractive error."

I asked the Air Force recruiter what he had for me. He told me that I could be a navigator on a B-52.

I asked the Navy recruiter what he had for me. He told me that all he could offer was four years of hard work.

I decided to join the Air Force. However, because of excessive refractive error, I never became a navigator. Instead, I became a grunt who signaled the planes into the hangars for repair jobs.

But, because of this turn of fate on an obscure malady, I was consigned to a sub-culture of which I was unfamiliar but eventually embraced as my own.

I am still grateful for that opportunity to experience a different, but no less important, way of life.

Changing jobs and changing majors and changing spouses are major turning points.
