My daughter really likes Sharon Creech and Esme Raji Codell. I don't know if you'd find them "babyish," as my daughter read these between her 9th and 11th birthdays. Holes, by Louis Sachar, is also a great book. If those are a little young for you, Patricia Wrede isn't bad. She does some fantasy, but often from a girl's perspective. My daughter just read Dealing with Dragons and thought it was pretty good.
When I was about 17-19, I was a big fan of Piers Anthony - his Incarnations of Immortality series. That's all I read of his. As an adult, I've found that I really like James Morrow. I've read everything of his, even titles that aren't in print anymore. I think he's one of the best. Anthony and Morrow are a bit heavier than your typical YA books - a lot of philosophy and religion permeate the pages - but maybe you're ready for that. I don't know. Daniel Quinn (Ishmael, etc.) is similar, but a little more understandable. The sequel to Ishmael, called My Ishmael, has as one of its main characters a 13 year old girl. You may like that one.
My sister is a librarian. I'll ask her if she has any suggestions, then edit this response.
Other than that, books are so personal. What one person likes, another will hate. It really depends on so many factors. I hope I've been some help. Whether or not I have been, please keep reading!

I absolutely loved the mysterious book called "Rebecca" by Daphne DuMaurier. She wrote many books - but that was my favorite.
I also loved all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" series, and all of Agatha Christie's Mysteries.... and you know how great they are.
I also loved books by Madeleine L'Engle like, "A Wrinkle in Time" - among others.
There are so many...
Wuthering Heights... Jane Eyre...Tales of the Arabian Nights (Scheherazade)... Any of the works by C.S. Lewis.... Anything by Rudyard Kipling... Cyrano de Bergerac....
My best suggestion - Pick a genre. If you like Mysteries - go to your library and ask where that section is. Walk through it and peek in the books you find there. Read the dust jackets and see if the previews there catch your eye.... and ENJOY!!!
Peace hon.

The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is really good! I fell in love with them about a year ago. There's only two right now (Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment and Maximum Ride: School's Out Forever), but judging by the ending of the second one, there will be more to come! They're about a girl named Maximum Ride (or just Max) and her five "brothers and sisters", although technically none of them are related. They're 98% human and 2% bird. As babies, they were taken from their homes and grew up in a research facility until a brave worker freed them and took them home with him. Now they're on their own...I won't spoil the ending for you, but they're so exciting! Once I started reading them, I couldn't put them down! You'll love them!

My favorite books around that age were young-adult fiction stories like The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time and The Westing Game.
They are awesome, check them out. Also at that age, I was starting to read bigger-kid books like Michael Critchon. Start with Jurrasic Park and see if it is better than the movie (it is).
