like in xp you have workgroup computers and you can view all the computers connected to you over your network right? Well I can't access my workgroup computers how can I get around this and how do I find out what computers are connected over a network using a router to a windows 98 computer. It doesn't make it very user friendly to find out who your connected to over windows 98 with a network like in xp. Any suggestions also how can I remove the invalid access pop up when trying to view the workgroup

You need to be sure you are in the same workgroup. If all the rest of the network is XP you may want to get an upgrade, Win 98 had alot of networking issues.

If all your ip,workgroup, log ons are set you should be able to access file shares on the system. Be sure Windows Printer and Files sharing are installed in the networking system for your 98 box. *Control Panel, Networking, Properties

Win98 was known to have these kinds of issues, Win98SE solved most of them, but the service pack I am talking about below solves the rest of the networking problems.

There is a web site called www.majorgeeks.com, on that web site there is a file you can download called UNofficial Win98SE service pack, get that file and save it to your computer, then install it or run the installer. works flawlessly, and updates all the critical winsock files and fixes many connectivity issues. I have not had any problems at all on two different machines after installing this service pack. It is not a MSFT appoved update, but they no longer support Win98 and this update will work wonders for you. There is a specific networking file that manually needs to be updated which is not offered on the windows update web site, you have to know that you need it and this service pack has it already.

Caution! you did not say you had Win98SE, you only said Win98, if you ARE running Win98, all bets are off, your better off installing one of the Linux distros located at www.distrowatch.com, maybe LinuxMint would be a good start. I'm saying this because Win98 is way too flaky, if you had the SE version or could upgrade to the SE then you would be ok.

I had to come back to this question and say one more time, Win98 is not the same as Win98SE. They are very very different OS's. If you manage to install the service pack above as I suggest and you are runnin Win98, then you will toast your system. make sure its Win98SE. on control panel, look at the system icon an double click it, it should open to the default tab and tell you whick OS you are running.
