In 1943 the cent was zinc coated steel. in 1982 the cent was changed from it's normal .950 copper/.050 zinc weight 3.11 grams to .992 zinc .008 copper with a plating of pure copper weight 2.5 grams. In 1982 both varieties exist, so they need to be weighted to tell them apart. The correct term is cents not pennies. The term penny though has stuck with us since Colonial days. There were also copper/nickel cents issued during the 1860's. Hope this answers your question.

For the year of 1943 copper pennies were replaced with a zinc alloy because of the need for copper in the War.
In 1983 the content of the penny was changed to 87% zinc clad in copper because of the price of copper.
