Eddie Guerrero died due to an enlarged heart along with significant internal heart damage cause by his excessive use of illegal steroids and narcotics. Guerrero routinely used cocaine and painkillers during his career. He also started using steroids during his WCW days. In 1997 or 1998, he was involved in a bad car accident and was charged with being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. It was during this time that he claims to have found Christianity (although he claimed he was a "practicing" Christian his whole career) and gave up all drug and alcohol abuse. To help him come back from potential career threatening injuries, he began to take larger amounts of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones. One of the bad side effects of HGH is that it causes all the muscles in your body to grow, including the ones around your heart. Also the steroids were causing the arterial walls of his heart to harden due to the increase in bad cholesterol levels. He probably would have lived longer had he stopped using the HGH once he came back from his injuries, but he became addicted to the way they made him feel and look. He also noticed that promoters were taking better notice of him now that he was bigger. He kept taking the HGH and steroids even though he kept telling his fans that he was "clean" of all illegal drugs. According to Sports Illustrated, he ordered HGH as soon as six months before dying. Finally, after the abuse of the cocaine, the hardening of his arteries by the steroids, and the effects of HGH, his heart gave out.

Eddie was found by his nephew Chavo in his hotel room back in november 2005. His autopsy report later stated that he died from heart failure due to all the drug and alcohol abuse in his past. Eddie was scheduled to defeat Batista for the world title the day of his death.

He was apparently on steroids for a significant amount of time. (That is why he won most of his matches) The steroids finally took an affect on his body and then he later died. It's really sad, considering he was one of my favorites.
