Ask your parents if they think anything is safe for teenagers, you can get hurt just as bad on a bike with pedals as you can on a dirt bike. Let them know that you're at the perfect age to start (actually like 8, or 9), but since you're past those ages, the sooner the better. My boyfriend got a dirtbike when he was 17 and he is almost 21 now and he loves it, the most he's ever been hurt is when he got a slight concussion after a small wreck (which didn't mess up his CR-250, 2-stroke at all). He has gotten hurt worse on a damn snow sled when he was 15 which broke his arm right in half above the elbow. He hasn't had full strength in it ever since. You need to tell your parents that you want to live a little, tell them they should try it!

Life is not safe but do you hear your parents saying you shouldnt breathe NO I dont think so. I am a mother of 4 children 3 2 2 and 6 months and this summer my 3 boys will be riding and when my daughter gets old enough 2-3 years she will be out there on 2 wheels too! And dont let them tell you oh a bike is more dangerous than a 4 wheeler why dont you get that! 4 wheelers are MUCH more dangerous, they have killed a lot of people just from landing on them. From personal experince, my huaband has been riding since he was like 4 and when he asked me to go, I was nerious cause I was scared of a bike, I have been riding a 3 wheeler since I was about 10 and now that I have been on a bike cliombing hills and what not, I will never get off it now!! Just make sure your being safe when you ride. Its not the riding that could hurt you its showing off and not waer safety gear! At least a helmet and always a buddy! Go out and lay your bike on the ground, if you can pick it up and start it you can ride! Just make sure someone knows where you are so if you dont come back because your out hurt they can find you!!!! USE the BUDDY SYSTEM!!!!!!!
Hey but remember HAVE FUN!!!

My 2 boys are 9 and 12 and both have dirt bikes Been riding before walking. Just being outside is unsafe. No one can really be a good judge of what is safe or unsafe. Cars are unsafe so are planes but does that mean you can't ever drive or fly? But I guess your folks have the final say so. Good luck and I really hope you can get that bike. If you do get a bike don't be crazy and get something you can't handle. To big of a bike is dangerous. My 9 yr old is still riding a KTM 50 and my 12 just moved up to a KX 80. Be smart and stay safe.

Well you got a lot of responses from your question.
As with almost everything in life....No! it's not safe. But just what is safe?
Compared to many other things it's very safe...Bungee jumping, cliff diving, snake charming.
Compared to other things it's just the same...Driving a car, riding in a car, skateboarding, snowboarding.
And compared to even other things, it's way more dangerous...Playing video games, watching TV, surfing the net.
I say go for it.
My son is 15 years old and loves his Ninja 250...not a dirt bike though.
I had a dirt bike when I was 12 years old. I wrecked a lot, never had any real injuries beyond cuts and bruises though.
I think it's good to start with a dirt bike. Dirt is lots softer than pavement. And you also learn some riding techniques on a dirt bike that you don't on a street bike.

There's reasons why there are age restrictions on quads and jetskis and no age restrictions on motorcycles. Dirt bikes are not 100% safe, but neither are the other things listed. With a jetski, you have the added risk of drowning. Not so good a way to die, and depending on how fast you are going.. 6 HP can do high speed, if it's over 40mph and you crash on water, it's going to be like hitting concrete, with less protective gear. Tell your mother that you will always wear protective gear and that quads and jestskis are more dangerous but in a different way. You can go just as fast on both. Both quads and jetskis are heavier. If the quad was to roll on top of you, you would have to bench press it off. That factor is where the government came up with age standards for quads. They made a calculation on how much an average X yr. old could bench press off of themselves if the quad would happen to roll on top of them. Dirt bikes, no the other hand, if they fall on you, it's just a matter of wiggling it off your leg. HTH, and be safe. You ARE NOT indestructable. D

My brother and his friend both bought off-road bikes and rode one of them along the sea front promenade at 4am in the morning. They passed a metal barrier that was up. When the returned the opposite way the barrier was down. They crashed into the barrier and his friend who was driving the bike was killed. My brother who was riding pillion went twenty feet in the air and landed on his head. Three months in a coma, three months in high dependency at Kings College Hospital London. Six months in neurological rehabilitation which included learning to walk again because his muscles wasted from lying in bed for the first 6 months learning to talk again because he has a tube stuck down his throat.
This all happened 9 years ago my brother was SEVENTEEN at the time. HIS FRIENDS PARENTS ARE STILL GRIEVING NOW.
Any machine be it a motorbike or even my mixing machine in the factory where I work can and will maim, injure or kill you unless you have the correct training to use it.
I dont think you're a silly 14 year old, you've had the courage and sense to come on here and ask us but every word of my story is 100% true, it will be safe ONLY if you have proper supervised training before being let loose alone (they didn't) AND MY BROTHERS FRIEND PAID FOR THAT LESSON WITH HIS LIFE.

When you mix the words teenager and dirtbikes during a conversation with your parents, they think of motorcross images. Safety depends on what you're going to do with a dirtbike and how much control you have when riding.
People make dirtbikes unsafe. Not the bikes alone. Ask yourself how responsible you are. If your parents don't trust you, then it doesn't matter if the bikes are safe.

Well Yes and No. Anything can be considered dangerous if it's used in the wrong way or put in the wrong hands. If you're mature enough to realize a dirtbike isn't just a toy and to be safe and wear a helmet, etc. then yes, they're safe. But it's not totally safe. Spend some time to learn about how to properly operate it, how to do so safely and what kind of protective gear to use, and also be sure to just be careful of your surroundings.

Where I live there are quite a few people who have them I think but the reason they have them is they live far out of town (a few hours from a main city/town, and they also own farms so they have lots of space to use them. I think as long as you have all of the safety gear - helmets.... and you use it properly then I guess they are safe. Also I thenk the people that have them here are at least 16 so maybe wait a year or two, but unless your family has a lot of land and money right now I dont think its worth getting one just yet. But you can always try asking for something more expensive/dangerous or something first and then ask for the bike and it wont seem as bad as the first thing you asked for. Or maybe blackmail them :P
